Today we walked from Lobuche to Gorakshep, at 5160m ASL.
The morning started off with lots and lots of hot chocolate and a hearty breakfast, despite our diminishing appetites. Dad asked us all if we wanted to go for a 15 minute walk to see the glacier, but it ended up being about 40 minutes with a big hill – still a good warmup for the day.
Along the walk we stopped at the Pyramid, which is an Italian research station that monitors seismic activity, glacier movement, and other consequences of climate change.
This was a nice break from walking, which was getting increasingly harder as we got higher, and there is less and less oxygen. We carried slowly on and had some more breaks, partly because we were getting more tired, but also to take in the stunning views. We could see Nuptse and Pumori very clearly, and they are both such impressive peaks. We were also able to get our first glimpses of Everest base camp which was very exciting, seeing as this will be my home base for about 5 weeks.
We arrived in Gorakshep, ate the tiniest bit of lunch, seeing as altitude makes you not very hungry at all. We spent the rest of the afternoon and night playing cards and Rummikub, and went to our shoeboxed sized room to bed.
