Today Dad and I walked to Pumori advanced base camp (ABC) at 5700m. Pumori is another big mountain near Everest, and doing a day hike from Everest base camp, up to ABC is very popular amongst climbers.
To help with acclimatisation, we need to get our heart rates up, at high altitudes, so doing hikes like these are perfect. It took about 3 hours round trip, climbing 600 vertical metres.
The past couple of nights I had not been sleeping well, and I definitely felt more tired than I should have. I felt like I needed to work much harder to keep a pace that would normally be easy at this altitude. After an hour, Dad and I caught up to my friend Julia and we walked the rest with her. When we walked with her I felt much better, and my breathing was under control. I think my body usually takes at least an hour to find its rhythm, but it’s always so humbling at the beginning for me.
Dad and I were hungry so we walked down ahead, and when we were nearing the bottom of base camp, a huge avalanche struck Pumori. It was so loud and the biggest I had ever seen in person. Luckily, it didn’t touch any climbers, but it must have been very scary for those that were still hiking down.
After the walk I met up with some friends and we went to the coffee tent of a friend’s expedition company (ours isn’t set up yet), and we chatted for a long time! After this, we had dinner and met up with more friends, some that I knew from previous expeditions, some from social media, and some completely new people! It’s so nice to hear such incredible stories from everyone! Here are some awesome stories/people from today:
- The longest climb of Mt Everest in history – from England to Nepal, swimming the channel, biking, running, trekking and climbing for 217 days
- I met someone who had climbed all 82 4000m peaks in a few months!
- Someone who had remained silent for 10 days straight meditating 14 hours a day
